Montclair United Soccer Club is pleased to announce the second season of the Under-8 Montclair United Soccer Academy (MUSA) for boys and girls and the inaugural season of the Under-9 MUSA for boys and girls. General details of the program for the 2009/2010 seasons follow, along with specific information for each pool of players.
To be eligible for the Under-8 Academy, children must have been born between Aug. 1, 2001, and July 31, 2002. To be eligible for the Under-9 Academy, children must have been born between Aug. 1, 2000, and July 31, 2001. For the 2009-2010 soccer season.
DESIGN OF MUSA PROGRAM
MUSA is offered by the Montclair United Soccer Club in partnership with professional training staff from the Sports Domain Academy (SDA; formerly Ashley’s Soccer Domain). Volunteer parent coaches with soccer playing backgrounds also assist with training for MUSA, enabling the program to be offered at a lower cost.
The purpose of MUSA is to provide developing players with an advanced training approach in an environment that is enjoyable and sporting for all participants, as well as appropriate in format for players (and parents) of this age group. The program inspires young players to learn and develop a passion for soccer through a positive reward system of training.
MUSA emphasizes learning technique and ball mastery. Individual player development emphasizes an "all-ball" approach that uses a range of training activities and techniques to maximize a player’s touches on the ball and to foster confidence, creativity and composure during play. Toward that, MUSA training also emphasizes small-sided games that foster skill development and imaginative, creative play. As players achieve success in small-sided games, they will be better prepared for the transition into a competitive travel soccer program.
COMMITMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS
U8 Boys and Girls
FALL & SPRING SEASONS - Players who join make a commitment to train outdoors three times a week in the fall and spring. All training is under the supervision of professional trainers from SDA and parent volunteer coaches. Training occurs twice during the week for one 1 hour each time. On Saturdays, small-sided, intra-squad games of approximately 15 minutes each take place in town only. The entire Saturday session lasts 75 minutes.
WINTER SEASON – Players will be offered the opportunity to engage in skills training at the SDA soccer dome, to participate in an indoor soccer league at a local indoor soccer facility, to participate in a maximum of two 1-day indoor tournaments at local facilities, and to train on approximately 10 consecutive Saturdays at a Montclair school gymnasium. All Winter training is optional and the cost for these activities is separate and will be announced in early winter.
TOURNAMENTS - There will be no outdoor tournaments scheduled during the fall 2009 season. However, a maximum of two in-town or out-of-town tournaments will be organized and made available to players during the spring 2010 season. The cost for participation in tournaments in the spring is additional and not covered by the outdoor training fee listed at bottom.
U9 Boys and Girls
FALL SEASON - Players who join make a commitment to train or play three times a week in the fall and spring. All training and game-playing is under the supervision of professional trainers from SDA and parent volunteer coaches. Each training session during the week lasts 90 minutes. On Saturday, small-sided, intra-squad games of approximately 15 to 20 minutes each take place in town only. The entire Saturday session lasts 90 minutes.
FALL TOURNAMENTS - There will be one outdoor tournament scheduled during the fall 2009 season (cost for the tournament is additional and will be announced early in the fall).

All Winter training is optional. The cost for these activities is additional and will be announced in early winter.
SPRING SEASON – Players will be evaluated by the professional staff and grouped into two (or three) boys and girls’ teams (based on skill level at that time). Each team will train twice a week for 90 minutes and will play competitive 8 against 8 games in the Northern Counties Soccer Association League. Play in this league requires both in-town and out-of-town games on Saturdays or Sundays.
