The Montclair United Soccer Club (MUSC) Colchesters won their second
straight New Jersey State Cup with a thrilling 1-0 over archrivals PDA
Clash in the Girl's U13 championship game Saturday (November 7) in
Somerset, NJ.
The Colchesters, who last year joined the Montclair Aristocats and
Thunderbolts as the only MUSC girls' teams to win a State Cup, have
developed a reputation for their stylish passing and ball skills.
But in the State Cup final against PDA, the nation's #8 ranked Girls'
U13 team, it was a combination of speed and physical defending that wore
down PDA to capture the seven-week tournament featuring New Jersey's top
72 teams in the under-13 age bracket.
Colchester forward Carly Leipzig, who led all Colchester scorers with
five State Cup goals, set up the game-winner. Late in second half,
Leipzig collected a pass from Holly Confalone, roared through the PDA
defense that hadn't allowed a State Cup goal and blasted a shot. The
PDA keeper deflected the ball but couldn't control the rebound.
Colchester midfielder Courtney Dadinos did. And Dadinos ripped a left
footed shot into the net for the game-winner.
At the other end of the field, it was Montclair's' back line of center
backs Julia Ashley and Annie Monaghan flanked by Lyndsey Ewertson and
Lucia Surraco who outplayed PDA in the air and provided a physical
defensive answer to PDA's high powered attack.
But it was goalkeeper Penelope Edmonds who preserved the victory by
snaring a last second, PDA direct kick in traffic. Edmonds along with
fellow goalkeeper Molly Barrow as well as defender Claire Fitzpatrick
were also important parts of the Colchester defense that limited
opposing teams to just four goals in the entire State Cup tourney. The
Colchesters missed savvy defender and set piece ace Casey Garfinkel who
was sidelined with a back injury. It was Garfinkel's curling 35-yard
free kick that was Montclair's 2009 State Cup final winner against Old
Bridge.
Montclair's Kayla Jennings, whose tenacity has been a Colchester staple
since the team formed six years ago as a U7 team playing mostly against
boy's teams, paced the Montclair midfield with four State Cup goals
while Dadinos (3 goals), Gabrielle Matone (2 goals) and Ana Revollo (1
goal) controlled the critical, State Cup midfield possession battle
along with Kathleen Bidad.
Up front, the Colchester forwards included Carly Leipzig and Holly
Confalone, who had four State Cup goals none larger than her
last-minute, game-winner in 1-0 semi-final win over Somerset that
punched Montclair's ticket to the finals. Solei Maldonado, who had a
State Cup goal, along with Amanda Romano and Kelsey Davis displayed
speed and ball skills that stretched opposing defenses and paced
Montclair to a 23-4 State Cup scoring advantage.
Jordan Raper, the director of player development at Ashley Hammond's
Sports Domain Academy, and SDA's Anthony Hanson, coaches the
Colchesters.
"Winning the State Cup is a testament to the girls' work ethic and
their passing, defending and skill development. They are a great
representative for the Montclair United Soccer Club and hopefully they
will carry their State Cup success into an even larger platform this
July at Region 1 in West Virginia," said Raper who is also the boy's
varsity soccer coach at MKA.
The Region 1 championships, slated for July 1-6, 2010 in Barboursville,
West Virginia, matches state champions from 15 Northeastern states as
part of the Youth Soccer National Championship series. The Montclair
Colchesters will represent New Jersey for the Girl's U13 age bracket.
