Montgomery Travelers Soccer Club
Youth Development Program
Our Youth Development Program is a program for boys and girls ages 5 – 9 (U6 through U10), regardless of skill level or experience. It follows US Soccer’s Best Practice Guidelines for the development of young players. It is designed to improve their ability to learn and enjoy the game of soccer.
The program's curriculum emphasizes development over winning, small sided games as the teaching environment and player time on the ball to help them improve their skills. Combining these three elements with appropriate levels of knowledgeable and qualified coaching are key success factors for a player's development. The format also offers the player the opportunity to apply their learning in games without being “overcoached.“
Each season, a few games will be scheduled with other clubs to expose the older players to external competition. Travel competition is optional but definitely encouraged. Players who do not wish to travel will receive the same training and will have local competitions when practical.
The program requires a commitment by season. A player can choose to play both fall and spring or to play only in the fall or only in the spring. Parents should understand, however, if at the age of U - 10, their child wants to tryout and be selected for a travel team, they are encouraged to participate in both fall and spring sessions each year, at least starting at the age of U-8. This will afford their child the opportunity to maximize their learning, gain more confidence and avoid falling behind the development rate of their peers.
