Montclair Winter Indoor Soccer - Futsal: The winter indoor program, co-sponsored by MUSC and the Township of Montclair, is going to become a Futsal league beginning this year. Futsal is a fun, fast-moving, 5v5 (4 + goalkeeper) game in which every player is equally involved on the court. It uses a smaller, less bouncy ball that players can control easier, so smart passing and quick footwork is emphasized. The ball is not played off the walls, as in the past in this program, but is considered out when it crosses the basketball court's out-of-bounds lines. This creates a safer game and encourages smarter play. The games are 40 minutes each, with 20-minute halves. (Complete rules to be posted soon.)
Teams will be formed when enough players have been registered in a given group, and registration will be capped when program is full. Coaches will contact their team members on or before the 2nd of January, 2010, and will distribute schedules and other information. This is a game-day-only league. Coaches are not expected to run practices. The league will run from January 9 through March 20, with games every Saturday except January 16. All games take place in the main gym of Mt. Hebron Middle School on Bellevue Avenue in Upper Montclair. Parking is on the street or in the lot on the west side of the school, across from the Montclair Public Library's Bellevue branch.
This league is coed, and is for players in the 1st through 5th grades, with age-appropriate divisions. Players must wear gym-suitable athletic shoes, low-tops preferred, and shinguards are mandatory. Players are not allowed to wear earrings, necklaces or watches. Coaches will distribute uniform jerseys and soccer socks before the first games.
